The Best SEO Agencies in 2026 (A Buyer's Shortlist)

A skeptic's shortlist of the best SEO agencies in 2026, ranked by inspectable evidence instead of pay-to-play directory placement and review counts.

The Best SEO Agencies in 2026 (A Buyer's Shortlist)

Search "best SEO agency" and you'll get two kinds of results. Directories that rank agencies by signals you can't audit, and agencies calling themselves the best on their own homepages. This page is the second kind, so let's earn your skepticism instead of pretending it away.

Here's the deal we're offering. First, how directory rankings actually work. Then a test you can run on any agency in an afternoon. Then ourselves at #1 with full disclosure, followed by nine real competitors evaluated from what their own websites state. No invented clients, no secondhand review scores, no "top agency" badges that come with an invoice.

One more thing changed since the last time you hired an agency. In 2026, "best SEO agency" has to mean an agency that treats AI answers as a first-class surface, because the click pool the old playbook fought over is shrinking. SparkToro's 2026 study found 68% of Google searches now end without any click, up from 60.45% in 2024. And Pew Research watched 68,879 real Google searches and found users click a traditional result on just 8% of visits when an AI summary appears, versus 15% without one. An agency still selling you rankings alone is selling you a bigger share of a smaller pie.

How directories actually rank agencies

Clutch, GoodFirms, and the Semrush agency directory dominate this search, so it's worth knowing what their lists measure.

Directories are businesses, and placement is part of the product. Clutch offers paid sponsorship placements, labeled once you know to look. Beyond sponsorship, the visible sort order leans heavily on review count and recency. GoodFirms runs on a similar mix of reviews and profile activity, and Semrush's directory lists agencies that have gone through Semrush's own partner program. You're reading membership rolls, graded partly by marketing effort aimed at the directory itself.

None of that is a scandal. It's just worth being clear about what those rankings measure, which is who runs the best review-collection operation and who pays for visibility. A 200-person agency that emails every client for a Clutch review after every project will beat a 15-person team doing better work for the same budget, every time, on every directory.

What should you measure instead? Deliverables you can inspect before you sign.

The criteria (the artifact test)

Every agency on this list was evaluated against one question. For each stage of the work they promise, is there a named deliverable a buyer can inspect? We call this the artifact test, and it's the fastest way to separate working agencies from landing pages. A real engagement produces five artifacts.

Stage

The artifact you should see

Demand mapping

Every buying query and AI prompt scored by buyer intent, with the reasoning visible

Answer-ready content

Pages that rank in classic search and get cited in AI answers

Entity coherence

An audit of every inconsistency in how the web describes you, with the fix list

Cited-surface placement

The specific third-party pages AI engines cite for your category, plus placements won on them

Measurement

A report where every claim traces to a measurement, tied to traffic and pipeline

On a sales call, that compresses to three questions. Ask to see prompt-level AI visibility tracking for a current client. Ask which specific pages they earned placement on last quarter. Ask how they prove any of it produced pipeline. Agencies doing the work answer in specifics. Agencies reselling a 2019 playbook go vague on all three.

We also gave real weight to public evidence. Published pricing, published methodology, published research, and named case studies count for more here than any review score, because you can check them yourself. Fit still outranks transparency in the order, though. A B2B-native shop with hidden pricing beats a generalist with a public rate card for the buyers this list serves.

Everything below about the other nine agencies comes from their own websites, fetched July 2026. We report what they state and flag what's self-reported. We have no inside knowledge of their delivery, so treat every entry as a starting point for your own test, ours included.

1. Powerplay

That's us, and you should discount this entry accordingly. It's our list.

So here's the disclosure that we think earns the spot. Powerplay is an AEO and SEO agency for B2B teams, and we run both as one program because the buyer journey stopped separating them. Google ranks pages. AI recommends brands. Our pricing is public at $6,995 to $11,995 per month with scope published by tier, and our full methodology is public too, in our AEO playbook, sources and all. The artifact table above is literally our delivery model. Intent-scored demand maps, the Citation Graph for your category, and Answer Share reporting where every claim traces to a receipt.

Genuine strength. We show the machinery before you pay. You can read the methodology, check the pricing, and run the artifact test on us before a single call. The gap in our entry is the one you should notice. No named clients yet, because none have opted into being case studies, and we won't rent logos to fix that. Weigh it.

Best for. B2B teams that want AI answers and classic search run as one measured program, and want to verify the vendor before trusting them.

And the test to run on us is the same one we just handed you. Ask us for prompt-level tracking, last quarter's placements, and the pipeline tie-back. If we go vague, walk.

2. Graphite

Graphite calls itself a research-driven growth agency with three service lines, research, AEO, and SEO. What sets them apart is that they publish their thinking. Their site carries original research on AI search scale and on AI-generated content, and their case studies name real clients with numbers attached, including Webflow, n8n, and Hinge Health.

Genuine strength. Published research you can actually read and argue with, which is rare in a category built on vibes.

Best for. Later-stage product companies that want an experiment-driven program and have the traffic volume to run one.

3. Siege Media

Siege Media now positions itself as a full-service GEO agency, with content strategy, digital PR, Reddit marketing, and research reports under one roof. Their site names Instacart, Zendesk, and Zapier as case studies with specific results attached, and claims over $148M in yearly client traffic value generated, a self-reported figure but a specific and checkable one by agency standards.

Genuine strength. Content production and digital PR at real scale, which maps directly to the offsite mentions AI engines lean on.

Best for. Consumer and mid-market brands whose winning play is high-volume content plus earned coverage, especially ecommerce, fintech, and travel.

4. Omniscient Digital

Omniscient is an organic growth agency built specifically for B2B software, covering SEO strategy, GEO, programmatic and technical SEO, and content production. Two things stand out on their site. They name clients with hard numbers, including Jasper and Smartling, and they publish a pricing floor, stating full-service engagements start at $10,000 a month. Public pricing is rare enough in this industry that it deserves its own sentence.

Genuine strength. B2B SaaS focus plus pricing transparency, so you know the ballpark before the first call.

Best for. B2B software companies with budget for a full-service strategic program rather than a content retainer.

5. Grow and Convert

Grow and Convert built its reputation on Pain Point SEO, their framework for targeting bottom-of-funnel queries that produce customers instead of traffic charts. They've extended the same conversion-first logic to GEO, and their AI visibility tracking tool is included free for every client, per their site. They report conversions, which sounds obvious until you audit how few agencies do it.

Genuine strength. A decade of arguing, in public and with receipts, that traffic without conversions is a vanity metric.

Best for. Teams whose agency spend gets judged on leads and signups, particularly SaaS and service companies.

6. Animalz

Animalz is a content marketing and SEO agency for B2B SaaS that has folded AEO into its core offer. Their positioning centers on spokespeople over brand voices and zero-click channel strategy, and their client logo wall includes Airtable, Amplitude, Atlassian, and Ramp. The bet they're making is that editorial quality and named experts are what earn citations now, which matches what the citation research keeps finding.

Genuine strength. Editorial craft and thought-leadership content at a level most agencies can't staff for.

Best for. SaaS brands whose moat is ideas and expertise rather than feature checklists.

7. Victorious

Victorious is a full-service SEO agency that has added a dedicated AEO practice for AI platforms. Their site leads with an awards trail, including Search Engine Land's Global SEO Agency of the Year, and they publish a minimum recommended budget of $6,000 a month, which puts them in the small club of agencies willing to state a number. Named clients include SoFi, Wayfair, and Salesforce.

Genuine strength. A long, third-party-judged awards record, which is a weaker signal than artifacts but a much stronger one than review counts.

Best for. Mid-market companies that want established, process-heavy SEO with an AI visibility layer on top.

8. Coalition Technologies

Coalition is a full-service agency covering SEO, PPC, web design, and email, with a strong ecommerce lean. The inspectable part of their pitch is a case study library their site puts at 860+, which is an unusual volume of published work to poke through. They offer month-to-month contracts and state that every agreement guarantees work hours in writing. Their headline claims, like generating 687% more revenue than the average agency, are self-reported, so weigh the case studies and ignore the superlatives.

Genuine strength. The sheer volume of published case studies, which gives you real material for due diligence.

Best for. Ecommerce brands that want SEO, paid, and site development handled by one vendor.

9. Thrive

Thrive is a full-service digital agency operating since 2005, with a site that reports 160+ team members, month-to-month contracts, and seven consecutive years on the Inc. 5000. They cover nearly every channel, from SEO and PPC to video and reputation management, and their site now publishes AI visibility case numbers alongside traditional results.

Genuine strength. Breadth and longevity. Twenty years and a large bench means capacity smaller shops can't match.

Best for. Small and mid-sized businesses that want every marketing channel under one roof rather than a specialist.

When you shouldn't hire any of us

An honest list needs this section, because for a lot of readers the right answer is nobody on it.

Your product or positioning is broken. No agency fixes a leaky funnel by pouring more traffic into it. If demos book but don't close, or trials start but don't convert, spend the retainer on product and positioning first.

You can't commit two quarters. Both SEO and AEO compound, and neither proves itself in four weeks. An agency that promises month-one wins just failed the artifact test. If you need pipeline this month, run outbound or paid.

You have the team in-house. A content lead who knows your buyers, someone technical who owns the site, and patience to build measurement can beat a mediocre agency. What's hard to replicate internally is the data layer and sustained production capacity next to day jobs. If you have both, keep the money.

You're buying a logo for a slide. If the real goal is telling the board "we have an SEO agency," a cheap retainer accomplishes that. Every agency on this list, us included, will be a waste of your money and their time.

FAQ

How much does a good SEO agency cost in 2026? The agencies on this list that publish numbers cluster in a consistent band. Victorious recommends a minimum of $6,000 a month, our engagements run $6,995 to $11,995, and Omniscient's full-service work starts at $10,000. Cheaper retainers exist everywhere, and they usually buy you a content calendar rather than a system. Whatever you pay, tie it to the artifact table above. A retainer that can't name its deliverables isn't a strategy, it's a standing order.

Should I hire an SEO agency or an AEO agency? Wrong split. The work overlaps so much that a shop treating them as separate products is selling you the same crawl twice. Hire one team that runs classic search and AI answers as a single program, and make them show you how the stages connect.

Are agency directories useless, then? Not useless, just miscalibrated. They're decent for building a longlist and reading how clients describe working with a shop. They're a poor instrument for picking a winner, because the ranking rewards review operations and sponsorship rather than delivery. Longlist from directories if you like, then shortlist with the artifact test.

How long before agency work shows results? Leading indicators, meaning citations, mentions, and Answer Share movement, typically start moving in the four-to-eight week range. Compounding effects take quarters. Anyone quoting guaranteed day counts is promising what the engines never promised them, and that's true of every agency on this page.

The bottom line

The directories will keep ranking whoever collects the most reviews and buys the best placement. You now have a better instrument. Ask any agency, this one included, for the five artifacts, the prompt-level tracking, last quarter's placements, and the pipeline tie-back. In a market where buyers increasingly take their shortlist from an AI answer, the best SEO agency is the one that can show you, with receipts, how it wins the answer and not just the ranking.
